In 1999, a family with God-sized dreams arrived in the greater Metroplex area. Their names were Gary and April Simons. For the previous ten years, Gary had served on staff with John Osteen, the former Pastor of well known Lakewood Church in Houston. April served with Osteen even longer – she is his daughter. When God called John Osteen to heaven, He also sent Gary and April to Arlington to start a new church.
They came with a dream to build a church – not with bricks and mortar, but with people. From the very beginning, this church has dreamed big because they serve a God that is big. Even during the church’s infancy, it took on massive projects to impact the community and evangelize the world. From feeding ten thousand people in a park to hosting the annual “Festival of Lights” that helped hundreds of thousands of people to celebrate the birth of Jesus, this church not only dreams big – they follow through big.
A big dream church is a challenge to house. The first service for High Point Church was held in the Simons’ living room with sixteen people, but it did not stay there for long. Soon they moved from the living room to Workman Junior High School and also used Bob Duncan as a youth facility. Then it needed more room and relocated to the auditorium at Workman Junior High School. After two years of being in temporary meeting places, the church began to ask God to give them a more permanent home. God came through in an incredible way.
This young church of only two years was given the opportunity to step out in faith and purchase the massive Johnson & Johnson corporate campus, located at the intersection of Highway 360 and Interstate 20. This 100-plus acre property provided the church with a 423,000 sq-ft building with fifty-one undeveloped acres. After months of construction and dedicated volunteer work, HighPoint Church opened its doors at the new facility in April of 2004. The new facility includes a 5,000 seat auditiorium, a massive Colonnade and coffee café to facilitate community, exemplary preschool and children’s facilities, and a Christian school.
Because new people immediately sense the accepting spirit created by God’s incredible love, healing and redemption, this church is still experiencing unbelievable growth.
God’s movement at HighPoint Church is unmistakable, and this is just the beginning of His miraculous plans for HPC!
